Residential Renewable Energy Installation

Our team at IR Energy, an Octopus Trusted Partner based in South Wales, recently completed a full residential renewable energy installation combining an Octopus Cosy heat pump, solar PV, EV and battery storage.

The project focused on reducing energy bills, cutting carbon emissions and future proofing the home against rising energy costs.

Lifestyle Patterns

This installation was designed for a young family in South Wales with higher-than-average energy usage. With more time spent at home, frequent hot water use and a need for consistent warmth, the household required a system that could deliver comfort without escalating costs.

The combination of a heat pump, solar PV, EV and battery storage provides:

  • Reliable, steady heating throughout the day for family comfort.
  • Ample hot water to support busy mornings and evenings.
  • Lower running costs despite higher energy demand.
  • Peace of mind knowing energy use is efficient, predictable and sustainable.

By using a smart Octopus tariff and app-based controls, the family can heat their home when electricity is cheapest, making renewable energy a practical choice for everyday family life.

The Smart Energy Installation

We combined cutting-edge technology to make this home comfortable, efficient and future-ready. Every system works together seamlessly to save energy, reduce costs and keep the family in control.

Octopus Cosy Heat Pump – 9kW

  • A low-carbon, high-efficiency heating system that keeps the home warm and cosy while taking advantage of cheaper electricity periods. Designed to work with Octopus Cosy, Agile and Intelligent tariffs, it’s a smarter way to heat the home sustainably.

Solar PV System – 3.6kW with Hybrid Inverter

  • With 11 solar panels facing south-east and south-west, the system captures sunlight throughout the day, generating clean electricity to power the home and support heating needs.

Battery Storage – 14.7kWh Hybrid

  • Storing surplus solar energy or low-cost overnight electricity for use when it’s needed most, maximising savings while keeping the home powered during peak times at just 7p per kWh overnight.

EV Charger – ICS 7kW

  • Smart, efficient EV charging at home, overnight or during low-cost electricity periods, fully integrated with the energy system.

Air Conditioning – 2.5kW Samsung Units

  • Consistent, energy-efficient cooling that keeps the home comfortable year-round.

How It All Works Together

  1. Solar panels capture sunlight and generate electricity throughout the day.
  2. Battery storage saves surplus energy for use when it’s needed most.
  3. Heat pump uses solar or low-cost electricity to provide efficient heating and hot water.
  4. Smart controls and Octopus Intelligent tariffs automatically optimise when energy is generated, stored and used, saving the family money while reducing their carbon footprint.

Smart Control & Monitoring via the Octopus App

Homeowners can easily control and monitor their heat pump directly through the Octopus Energy app. This provides full visibility over energy usage, heating performance and costs in real time.

Key features include:

  • Adjusting heating schedules and temperatures remotely.
  • Monitoring when the heat pump runs to align with off-peak rates.
  • Clear insights into electricity usage, helping the household make smarter energy decisions.
  • Greater confidence that the system is always running in the most cost-effective way.

This level of control ensures the heat pump, solar panels, and battery work together seamlessly while keeping running costs as low as possible.

Key Outcomes

With the combined system running on the Octopus Intelligent smart tariff, the household was able to shift energy use to cheaper off-peak periods while maximising self-consumption of solar power.

This resulted in:

  • Pre-install December 2024 bill: £430
  • Post-install December 2025 bill: £285
  • Monthly bill reduction: £145
  • Yearly saving of: £1,740
  • Overall saving: 33.7% reduction in energy costs, even during winter

Additional benefits include improved home comfort, more stable indoor temperatures, and smarter energy usage throughout the day.
