Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK government initiative that provides grants to support the installation of low-carbon heating systems, helping property owners replace fossil fuel heating such as gas or oil boilers. The scheme is available in Wales and England and is designed to encourage the transition to more energy-efficient, environmentally friendly heating.
Grant Amounts
Under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, you can receive:
- £7,500 towards an air source heat pump
- £7,500 towards a ground source heat pump
- £5,000 towards a biomass boiler
The grant is applied upfront by your installer and deducted from the total installation cost.
Who Can Apply
You may be eligible if you:
- Own your property (including homeowners, landlords, and small businesses)
- Are replacing an existing fossil fuel heating system
- Have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)
Most new build properties are not eligible. Social housing is also generally excluded.
Biomass Boiler Eligibility
You can only get a grant for a biomass boiler if:
- Your property is in a rural area
- Your property is not connected to the gas grid
- The installation meets required emissions standards
How the Scheme Works
You cannot apply directly yourself. Instead:
- Contact an MCS-certified installer
- The installer will assess your property
- They will apply for the grant on your behalf
- The grant is deducted from your quote
The installation must usually be completed within 120 days of the application being approved.
Scheme Dates
- Opened: 23 May 2022
- Closing date: 31 December 2027, 11:59pm (midnight)
Applications must be submitted before the closing date.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme aims to reduce carbon emissions by supporting the switch to low-carbon heating systems. It forms part of the UK government’s wider plan to reach net zero.
