Customer Overview

While renovating an annex building on their property in South Wales, our customer wanted to install an efficient heating solution that would provide year-round comfort while future-proofing the building for long-term use.

With the renovation underway, it was the perfect opportunity to install a low-carbon heating system before the internal finishes were completed, ensuring the property would benefit from modern, energy-efficient heating from day one.

The Challenge

The annex was being fully refurbished and required a reliable heating system that could:

  • Maintain comfortable temperatures throughout the year
  • Reduce reliance on traditional fossil fuel heating
  • Deliver lower running costs over the long term
  • Provide a future-proof renewable heating solution
  • Be suitable for a standalone building separate from the main home

The customer was keen to invest in a sustainable solution that aligned with the wider renovation project and would help improve the property’s energy performance.

Our Solution

Following a detailed site survey, IR Energy recommended the installation of an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) system.

The heat pump was carefully sized to meet the heating requirements of the annex, ensuring optimal efficiency and performance once the renovation was complete.

Our installation included:

  • Air Source Heat Pump installation
  • Hot water cylinder integration
  • Heating system commissioning and optimisation
  • Full customer handover and system guidance

The system was installed alongside the ongoing renovation works, allowing the heating infrastructure to be incorporated seamlessly into the refurbishment.

Technical Design & System Specification

To make sure the heating system was the right fit for the annex, the IR Energy team carried out a detailed heat loss assessment. This allows us to understand exactly how much heat the building needs to stay warm and comfortable, even during the coldest winter days.

The detached annex has a floor area of 36.8m² and was found to need just 2.86kW of heat when outside temperatures drop to -5°C. Thanks to its relatively low heating demand, it was an ideal property for an Air Source Heat Pump.

Based on these results, we installed a Samsung 5kW Air Source Heat Pump. The system was carefully sized to provide enough heating for the entire annex, as well as reliable hot water throughout the year.

By choosing a heat pump that perfectly matches the building’s needs, the customer can enjoy a warm, comfortable living space while benefiting from lower energy use, reduced running costs and a more sustainable way to heat their property.

The Results

The annex now benefits from an efficient, low-carbon heating system capable of providing both heating and hot water throughout the year.

Key benefits include:

Reduced Carbon Emissions

  • By replacing traditional fossil fuel heating with renewable technology, the customer has significantly reduced the property’s environmental impact.

Lower Running Costs

  • Air Source Heat Pumps can deliver multiple units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed, helping to reduce energy costs when compared with conventional heating systems.

Future-Proofed Property

  • The annex is now equipped with a modern heating system that supports future energy efficiency goals and helps increase the property’s long-term appeal.

Comfortable Living Space

  • The customer can enjoy consistent temperatures and reliable hot water all year round, creating a comfortable environment for future occupants.
